When Gail and Lew Held founded Disco Sports 44 years ago…
Has it really been 44 years?!?!?!?
When they founded Disco, it was largely because of the connections that they made participating in their kids’ team sports. Those kids now help to run the store, and that connection is as strong as ever. It’s because of the people who shop with us that we stay in business and why we keep doing it. It’s because of you.
We recently had a visit from Virginia Baldwin, who came to Disco with her family and friends for some sporting equipment. They left with nets, balls, pumps, whistles, and more. But this haul of gear wasn’t destined for their backyard or going to a local team. It was headed to Belize.
Belize is a beautiful Caribbean country with a long Mayan history, and a long one of being part of the British Empire. Eco-tourism drives much of their economy, and while opportunities for the people of Belize exist, the opportunities for kids to play does not.
Virginia and her family are taking a group of about 25 Hanover-area youths to Belize to teach basketball and cheerleading camps. They’re also painting a school, and putting up basketball goals and volleyball nets. They’ve been in the past as part of Kidz Konnect 4 Jesus, handing out food, but this time the focus of their trip is handing out organized play!
It gives us great joy to visit with our friends at camps and clinics, at places like Tuckahoe Little League and Collegiate Aquatics. We are thrilled to have entire teams walk into the store and amazed to meet second and third generation Disco shoppers. Our third generation helps out from time to time.
Sometimes we feel honored to participate in someone else’s act of goodness.
