My little guy is gearing up for T-Ball and I for one am stoked for a full summer of coolers, mitts and sunblock. Do you have plans for a team this summer? Way back around the turn of the century Norman Triplett, the father of sports psychology got curious about why cyclists were so much faster in a group than they were alone. Since then many studies have shown that being part of a team enhances physical performance, teaches lessons about cooperation, and teaches youngsters how to accept criticism. A 2010 study by Keith Zullig and Rebecca White showed that kids in the 7th and 8th grades who participated in team sports rated their life satisfaction and physical health higher than kids who didn’t. Happier and Healthier: Go Figure. Richmond is chock full of opportunities for your little guys and gals to get engaged in team sports. Tuckahoe Little League is going to have over 1600 youngsters swatting pitches and shagging flies this year. The Richmond Kickers have camps, clubs and clinics for all age groups. Richmond’s Sports Backers has a long history of training folks for the marathon but they also have a number of youth programs. It’s not about winning or losing; it’s about whether you play. We say play. Of course we would say that: we are Disco Sports. We’re biased. We’re so into team sports that we have a whole department dedicated to it. If you need gear for your team we have it.
